Feature Article: Living with epilepsy and seizures during the COVID-19 pandemic

The last few months have been tough for most of humanity; this has been the result of the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected the entire world. People with epilepsy (PWE) have unique concerns, some of which will be addressed in this issue's feature article (and useful linked resources have been provided). Additional recommendations will be offered for everyone living through this pandemic.

Seizure star: Yazmina Wahby, beauty pageant competitor and epilepsy advocate

Every issue, we feature an epilepsy star.  An Epilepsy Star is someone who lives with epilepsy and seizures or someone who cares for someone with epilepsy and seizures and who is doing amazing work to raise awareness and improve the wellbeing of the epilepsy community.  This issue's spotlight is on Yazmina Wahby, an absolutely lovely beauty pageant competitor from New Jersey. Her platform is epilepsy awareness.

Epilepsy Survey results: Have you been keeping your appointments with your doctors through telemedicine?

For this issue, because of the many changes brought about by Covid-19, we wondered how many of our website visitors had switched over to telemedicine in order to keep in touch with their health professionals.  Our survey question was:
Since most doctors' offices are closed due to COVID-19, have you switched to telemedicine (having your appointment on-line with your doctor or nurse)?  Yes or No

Our epilepsy and seizures community of patients, family, friends and doctors has been busy!

Even though many activities were cut short in recent months, our epilepsy and seizures community of patients, family members, and doctors has kept busy! We are all very proud of Katheleen Boreale MS, APN-BC, one of our fantastic nurses, who earned her Ph.D.!  Also, our doctors have continued publishing their research which you can check out below.

VIRTUAL SUPPORT GROUPS

PSYCHOGENIC NON-EPILEPTIC SEIZURES (PNES) SUPPORT GROUP

Our PNES online support group will be resuming in September of 2020.

Third Tuesday of the month from 12-1PM

The group is for patients at our NEREG PNES program diagnosed with PNES who have completed treatment or who are advanced in their current treatment. Unfortunately, the group is not open to anyone who has not gone through our treatment program because the demand would be too great for our conference call. The group meets to touch base, to go over current problems that may have arisen for group members associated to PNES, for general support and comradery, and to continue to be part of the PNES community. To register or obtain more information: lmyers@epilepsygroup.com

EPILEPSY SUPPORT GROUP

One Wednesday per month from 12-1PM

The group is for persons with epilepsy who wish to connect virtually with others also living with epilepsy. The group meets to touch base, to go over challenges that may have arisen for group members associated to epilepsy, for general support and camaraderie. To register or obtain more information: lmyers@epilepsygroup.com

Joining a group is easy!

Benefits:
• All 60-minute sessions are held through GoToMeeting®
• Each group is kept small in order to encourage friendship and optimal discussion time (8-10 participants.)
• All groups are led by a facilitator who is knowledgeable about psychogenic non-epileptic seizures.
• Confidential.
• Participation in this facilitated discussion is expected and encouraged. You are not on camera, so come in your PJs.
• FREE

CONTACT INFORMATION

If you are a NEREG patient, have epilepsy and would be interested in a similar group, please contact lmyers@epilepsygroup.com. In the past, we tried to establish an on-line group like this for our patients with epilepsy but there was limited attendance-but who is to say that we can't try again and with better results?
