3) A Special Interest Group (SIG) is created to advance a specific area of knowledge. Doctors come together and cooperate to promote growth within that particular topic and may organize presentations and projects.

Dr. Jeffrey Politsky’s Special Interest Group on TUMOR-INDUCED EPILEPSY for the American Epilepsy Society earned enough votes and will meet in December, 2011.
Tumor-induced epilepsy (TIE) occurs in about 25-40% of patients with intracerebral neoplasms, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Neuroectodermal tumors, gliomas in particular, represent the most common type of primary parenchymal CNS tumor. The mechanisms underlying TIE are uncertain. The primary aim of this special interest group focused on TIE is to provide a forum for the presentation and analysis of related material to interested AES members and to establish and expand a network of individuals interested in advancing our understanding of the relationship between brain tumors and epilepsy.

Dr. Evan Fertig’s Special Interest Group on CRITICAL CARE MONITORING for the American Epilepsy Society earned enough votes and will meet in December, 2011.
Seizures in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) often present as non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). Causes of NCSE are diverse and include cerebral hemorrhage, brain tumors, hypoxic, ischemic, and traumatic brain injuries, post-operative states, central nervous system infection, and various systemic illnesses. Seizures and NCSE, especially undetected, place the critically ill patient at even greater risk of brain injury, prolonged hospitalization, increased morbidity and mortality, and poorer outcome.
The primary aim of this special interest group is to provide a forum for the presentation and analysis of related material to interested AES members and to establish and expand a network of individuals interested in advancing our ability to diagnose and treat this complicated subset of epilepsy patients.

Drs. Marcelo Lancman and Pavel Kline’s Special Interest Group on PRIVATE PRACTICE EPILEPSY for the American Epilepsy Society earned enough votes and will meet in December, 2011.
Until recently, care of epilepsy patients has been restricted to academic institutions with the appropriate departments and complement of faculty members. Over the past decade, however, a cohort of private practice epilepsy groups has emerged and developed mechanisms to deliver, at a minimum, the same level of care to the epilepsy patient as larger academic facilities. Independent private groups have the potential to rapidly adjust to changes in medical and social practices thereby offering novel services as needed. The primary aim of this special interest group is to establish and foster a network of private practice groups and their caregivers through which enhanced delivery of care and development of patient advocacy and clinical research is achieved.

* Two of our staff members, Kim Potts and Dr. Lorna Myers are donating their time to be on the Stroll for Epilepsy (EFNENY) Organizing Committee.  We really appreciate the work they are putting into this.
