Epilepsy and Seizure star: June's Star is Alyssa Cerchio, an amazing young trailblazer in the epilepsy community!

Our June 2021 Epilepsy Star is Alyssa Cerchio, an amazing young person who has been blazing trails in epilepsy awareness nationally and locally!  Please read on to learn all about her activities that support the epilepsy community and maybe even get some ideas on how to become an epilepsy advocate yourself.

What has your journey with epilepsy been like for yourself and your family?

Epilepsy came into my life when I was 12 when I was diagnosed with generalized epilepsy.

How have you been active in raising epilepsy awareness and helping the epilepsy community? Why did you decide to become active in this way?

I have been active in raising epilepsy awareness and helping the epilepsy community by being an Epilepsy Awareness Ambassador at the Epilepsy Foundation of America, a Lemonade for Livy Ambassador, and Lolas Luv Ambassador. Being able to be ambassadors for all of these organizations, allows me to spread awareness to others and participate in the activities that these programs provide.

Locally, I have brought the attention of epilepsy to my community by receiving a proclamation for my town and by having a rock painted for the month of epilepsy.

I am also thrilled to be a part of Teens Speak Up (TSU) through the Epilepsy Foundation of America (EFA).  It is a group run by the EFA in which teens receive advocacy training and share their stories with members of Congress in order to make a difference.  Some of the topics we advocate for include Health Care and Funding or Awareness for Epilepsy. I cannot wait to see what comes out of these efforts and to see what the future holds for spreading knowledge about epilepsy.

What do you see for yourself in the future? How do you imagine yourself working on epilepsy awareness?

In the future I see myself graduating high school and going to a four-year college. With epilepsy awareness, I imagine myself spreading the word epilepsy everywhere to be heard, seen, and known.

Is there anything else you want us to know?

Thank you for choosing me as Epilepsy Star. :)
