Survey: For this issue, we asked our readers, Do you celebrate Purple Day to raise Epilepsy awareness?. There were three responses to choose from: Yes, No, I’ve never heard of it.
Purple Day® was presented in our March 2024 feature article and the director of the Anita Kaufman Foundation that coordinates Purple Day® worldwide, Debbie Josephs, was our March 2024 Epilepsy Star.
Purple Day® is a fantastic grassroots movement that was started in Canada by an little girl, Cassidy Megan, when she was only 9-years-old. Why Purple? Well, because her favorite color was PURPLE. She was living with epilepsy and wanted to promote global awareness about epilepsy, bring it out of the shadows, and create a community movement. In order to achieve this, on March 26, 2008, she held the first ever Purple Day with the invaluable assistance of the Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia.
Purple Day® in the present continues its exceptional work combating stigma, advocating for the epilepsy community, bringing the world together with Cassidy Megan still at the forefront and with the help of many Ambassadors and epilepsy organizations around the world.
Survey results indicate that we still have a lot of work to do since almost half of our respondents said they had never heard of Purple Day®! Let’s see if we can change that by March 26, 2025 with much more word-of-mouth and publications.
