Feature article: Headaches and Migraines and Epilepsy
Headaches and Epilepsy are neurological conditions; each can cause significant discomfort and negatively impact quality of life. At times, there is a connection between these two neurological conditions and the same person may experience both.
Let’s start today’s article by defining a headache and then discussing the different types of headaches that can occur in people who have epilepsy. Headaches are defined as pain or discomfort located not only in the head, but that can also occur in the face, or neck. Headaches and migraines are not the same. Headaches refer to general head pain, while migraines are a specific type of headache characterized by severe, often throbbing pain usually on one side of the head, often accompanied by additional symptoms like nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes visual disturbances (auras). Regular headaches don’t usually have these other symptoms.

| Safety in Epilepsy: Automatic shut off irons |
People with epilepsy (PWEs) are at a higher risk of suffering certain injuries including bumps, cuts, fractures, concussions, and burns. Risks of injury are greater when the seizures the person has are associated with loss of consciousness, are generalized tonic-clonic seizures, or are poorly controlled, among other reasons. Some seemingly innocuous objects at home may pose a danger to someone who is living with epilepsy. One such device is the iron we use to iron our clothes.

| Epilepsy Star: Marc Palmieri |
For our March issue, we are excited to feature our Epilepsy Star, Marc Palmieri who is the author of "She Danced with Lightning, My Daughter’s Struggle with Epilepsy and her Boundless Will to Live." This exceptional book was selected as our March 2025 Epilepsy Book Club choice. The book club members had the pleasure of not only reading this fantastic non-fiction novel but will also have the honor of having Marc join us during our meeting on March 21! Marc is an exceptional epilepsy dad who published a book in honor of his daughter a few years back. The book illustrates beautifully the strength Marc’s daughter, Anna, his other daughter, Nora, his wife, Kristen, and Marc exhibited for nearly 12 years as they battled epilepsy yet managed to live and grow despite it all. Please read about Marc who undoubtedly deserves to be the Epilepsy Star of our March 2025 issue!
