Feature Article: Epilepsy in Women – Epileptologist, Dr. Olgica Laban-Grant

Dr. Olgica Laban-Grant, epileptologist who has a particularly interest in epilepsy in women sat with us to answer questions about what women who have epilepsy should know. She explained important facts about epilepsy medications in pregnant women, adjustments in epilepsy treatment when trying to not get pregnant and in menopausal women. She also told us about catamenial epilepsy and by what means doctors can better tackle epilepsy of a catamenial type.

Safety devices in Epilepsy - The Sleep-Safe pillow

What can be done to prevent SUDEP? More recently, a growing number of devices and items are being marketed as an added safeguard for patients with seizures and Epilepsy. In theory they are marketed as potentially lowering the occurrence of SUDEP.  As always, we do not endorse these products and have no financial gain associated to them; this is simply meant to be educational.
In this issue, Don Alderton, inventor of the Sleep Safe pillow is featured in our epilepsy safety section. He tells us about the pillow he created almost 20 years ago in an effort to prevent suffocation during nighttime seizures. He started this to help his son.

New Epilepsy Program: MEG-state of the art diagnostic device- the only one available in NY, NJ, CT

The Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group’ Comprehensive Epilepsy Center located at Overlook Medical Center has just made available the only clinical Magnetoencephalography (MEG) unit in the region (that includes NJ, NY and CT).

Our patients and NEREG have been busy over the last few months

The second half of this year, the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group has participated in 2 Epilepsy Walks, organized 11 educational conferences for epilepsy patients and their loved ones, presented research at the American Epilepsy Society Annual meeting and several international meetings, taught courses on epilepsy for nurses, and launched a wellness in epilepsy initiative in November in honor of Epilepsy Month.

1) March 26, 2012: Purple Day
Purple Day began in 2008 and is now the world’s largest epilepsy event, with over 100 countries taking part. Founded by nine-year-old Canadian Cassidy Megan to raise awareness and shine a light on epilepsy. 

2) March 31, 2012: National Epilepsy Walk in Washington, DC
The Northeast  Regional Epilepsy Group will be participating in the National Walk for Epilepsy scheduled to take place on the National Mall in Washington, DC

Launched in 1998, Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group (NEREG) is a multi-site practice in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut that offers unique services and comprehensive care to children and adults with epilepsy. NEREG provides state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures, 24/7 patient service, highly skilled and experienced practitioners, and exceptional specialty programs designed to cover a broad range of health care needs in each epilepsy patient. NEREG consists of twenty board-certified epilepsy specialists with fellowship training in adult and childhood epilepsy, as well as many other highly skilled health care providers including pediatric/adult neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists, epilepsy nurse practitioners, a specially trained nutritionist and epilepsy advocates.
Launched in 2003, Mid-Atlantic Epilepsy and Sleep Center (MAESC) is a practice located in Bethesda, Maryland that offers neurological services and comprehensive care to children and adults. MAESC consists of six board-certified neurologists who treat epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and other neurological illnesses.
