Epilepsy Information

Myoclonic seizures

• Rapid, brief (less than a second) and sudden jerking, mostly involving arms and trunk
• Can occur in clusters typically lasting for few minutes
• These persons are often sensitive to strobe lights
• Note: Not all jerking episodes are related to epilepsy. They could also happen normally during sleep.
• EEG: generalized polyspike-wave discharges
• Myoclonic seizures happen in different kinds of myoclonic epilepsy, for example benign myoclonic epilepsy, myoclonic astatic epilepsy, juvenile myoclonic epilepsy
