Epilepsy Information

Complex partial seizures

• Patient is not aware and there is no memory of the event.
• Staring and automatic behaviors (e.g. picking at clothes or tapping) are the most typical and common manifestations.
• Duration: several seconds to few minutes
• After the seizures the patient is confused
• EEG
  - Interictal: focal spikes
  - Ictal: will show seizure activity in almost all the seizures with the scalp EEG, differently from the simple partial seizures. The reason is that there is a more wide area of the brain creating an electrical field that is “seen” by the scalp EEG electrodes
