Our epilepsy community has been busy with Walks for epilepsy and seizures, conferences for patients and loved ones, purple knitting, purple pumpkins, and epilepsy webinars

On September 20, NEREG held its awesome and far-reaching Annual Conference on Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders (with a special session on Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures) in Mahwah, NJ.  The conference offered four simultaneous all-day sessions including Advances in Epilepsy Treatments, Epilepsy and seizures in children, Epilepsy and seizures in Adults, and Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures: diagnosis and treatment. A total of 18 experts in epilepsy diagnosis and treatment, legal issues in epilepsy, and psychogenic seizures presented to almost 200 people in attendance.  Continuing education credits were offered for nurses and EEG technologists.  The conference was a success in every respect! Thank you to all who attended and to all the doctors and specialists who donated their Saturday.

On November 8, NEREG hosted its Fourth Annual Epilepsy Conference in Manhattan, NY featuring lectures on the use of medical marijuana in epilepsy treatment, epilepsy emergencies and how to respond, and wellness in epilepsy and epilepsy resources.  As always, the conference was held simultaneously in English and Spanish allowing our team to reach a larger group of patients and loved ones with the most updated information on epilepsy and seizure treatments.  Spanish-language Newspaper, El Especialito, asked to have a reporter and photographer present in order to feature the conference in their next issue which is an excellent way to get the word out about epilepsy to the Latino community.

On October 22nd our Hackensack office hosted the Purple Pumpkin Project! Our doctors provided the pumpkins, paint and decorations and our kids and fun-loving adults provided the energy and creativity.  At the end of the event, all who attended got to take their pumpkin home to keep raising epilepsy awareness by placing a sign next to their pumpkin: Ask me why my pumpkin is purple?

On October 18, team Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group marched and ran in Jersey City at the Glow Walk and Run raising funds for the EFNJ and raising awareness for epilepsy and seizure disorders.  The team was successfully captained by Urmi Vaidya, LCSW who walked with the group, and epileptologist, Dr. Evan Fertig who ran the 5K.  Our team raised a whopping: $2303 and recruited 18 loyal walkers.  Dr. Evan Fertig had the honor of being the top individual fundraiser and Team NEREG was the top fundraising team.

On October 7, we started a four week course held in New Jersey and Manhattan, NY simultaneously for prospective knitters.  Our doctors provided the purple (and teal) colored yarns and two wonderful volunteers (Marina and Daissy) offered their knowledge to teach others how to knit.  Some absolutely wonderful scarves came from this project. These will be raffled off over the next few months to raise funds for Team NEREG which will be walking in Washington, DC in April 2015.  All funds will be donated to the American Epilepsy Society.
