Our epilepsy and seizures community of patients, family, friends and doctors has been busy!

Epilepsy on the move! Our community of epilepsy and seizures members is composed of patients, family members, friends and doctors. And over the past few months, our group has certainly been busy!  The two biggest items in early 2023 are the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group and partner, Mid-Atlantic Epilepsy and Sleep Center have continued to offer their Wellness in Epilepsy Program. As a result, they held their second virtual book club in February. Also, International Epilepsy Day on February 13 was celebrated allowing us to join this ever-expanding global initiative.

February 13, 2023

This day is a joint initiative of the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) celebrated across the globe in the 120 of countries in which IBE and ILAE are represented. The International Epilepsy Day is one of the most successful epilepsy awareness events in the world (#internationalepilepsyday).  New Yorkers and New Jersey residents joined in on this day to celebrate and raise awareness on epilepsy!

This is a day for everyone, no matter where you are. All over the USA and the world, no matter whether it is just one person or a whole group, epilepsy awareness and combating stigma on this day is not only possible, but necessary. This is a day for celebrating the strength and courage of those whose lives have been touched by epilepsy and to highlight the difficulties faced by those who live with epilepsy. This day allows us to speak with one global voice.

Wellness in Epilepsy Program: Book Club for Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group and Mid-Atlantic Epilepsy and Sleep Center Patients.

Book club members met virtually on this day to discuss "Dings" by Dr. Lance Fogan who is a retired pediatric neurologist.  The novel is powerful in that it depicts a family struggling with an unknown diagnosis that affects their young son's life and the circuitous route they take to arrive at the answer.  In the book club, members reflected on how things have changed in the last decades regarding epilepsy in the schools and in society in general.  Another comment was on how well and clearly the book explained diagnostic procedures in epilepsy.  Also, the glossary was highlighted as very useful. At the end of the meeting, a vote on the next book occurred and the chosen book is "A smell of burning: A memoire of epilepsy" by Colin Grant (https://www.amazon.com/dp/009959787X?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details).
