Stay tuned for upcoming epilepsy and seizure disorder events and news in the first quarter of 2025

Happy new year and stay tuned for upcoming epilepsy and seizure disorder events and news in the first quarter of 2025!  International Epilepsy Day, the National Epilepsy Walk and Purple Day are all coming up! Also, our monthly virtual support groups and our quarterly book clubs are running all through June of 2025.

February 10: International Epilepsy Day

This day is a joint initiative of the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) celebrated across the globe in the 120 of countries in which IBE and ILAE are represented. The International Epilepsy Day is the most prestigious epilepsy event in the world.  Let's use this day to raise awareness about epilepsy!

This is a day for everyone, no matter where you are in all of the USA or the world, no matter whether it is just you or a whole group of you. We want you to help us celebrate and highlight the difficulties faced by those who live with epilepsy on International Epilepsy Day! Let's speak with one global voice.  Remember that PURPLE is the official awareness color of epilepsy--you can wear purple clothes, hair extensions, nail polish, deck your home, car, or office in purple.  Swing by our offices to celebrate the day with your doctors and all the staff.

March 14: Virtual Epilepsy Book Club

The Epilepsy Book club will be reading "She danced with lightening" by Marc Palmieri this time around.

As part of our Wellness Program, NEREG and MAESC hosts an on-line epilepsy and seizure-themed Book Club every 4 months!  Everyone in the group reads the book on their own, then “meets” online to talk about it: impressions, opinions, critiques.  Books are selected based on their relevance to epilepsy, such as books that have a fictional or non-fictional character with epilepsy or that is written by a person living with epilepsy.  The group will vote on the upcoming books to read.

Synopsis of the book: Eleven-year-old Anna has lived all her life with severe epilepsy. Despite the ravage of thousands of violent seizures and heavy medications, she has thrived at school, athletics, and her greatest passion—dance. As she approaches her twelfth birthday, Anna’s condition takes a dire turn. Her health declines quickly and a new diagnosis is revealed, leaving the family only one excruciating choice. A parent’s memoir about the medical mysteries of epilepsy and the personal suffering of raising a child with a deadly health condition, She Danced with Lightning is told from the perspective of Anna’s dream-chasing father, who comes to learn from her a strength and courage he never imagined possible.

Please email lmyers@epilepsygroup.com if you are interested in participating.

March 15: National Epilepsy Walk at the National Mall in Washington, DC

This event is more than just a walk - it’s an opportunity to come together as a community with families, friends, and advocates in the heart of our nation’s capital. Whether you're directly impacted by epilepsy or simply want to show your support, your participation makes a difference. Together, we can create a world where everyone impacted by epilepsy can thrive. Lace up your shoes, bring your purple, and let’s make strides toward change!

There is no fee to register, however when you raise $100 or more you'll earn this year's official National Epilepsy Walk swag.

March 26: PURPLE DAY

Many of you have heard about this global awareness raising day where we can all be as creative as possible with the color purple (official color of epilepsy) as long as we are striving to raise awareness and educate others about this serious and important disorder.  Check out the The Great Purple Cupcake Project hosted by the Anita Kaufman Foundation: https://purpledayeveryday.org/events/the-great-purple-cupcake-project-for-epilepsy/

Don't forget to send in your pictures of how YOU chose to color March 26 all shades of purple!
