Safety in Epilepsy: Staying safe in bed with Skil-care Bed Rail Wedge Pads

You might think that having a seizure in bed would be quite safe because you should be at a lower risk of falls and injuries. But especially if seizures involve intense physical activity and thrashing, having a seizure during sleep can occasionally lead to an injury. It is important to remove all objects that might potentially be dangerous from around the bed (e.g., pointy, hard, or heavy furniture, glass lamps or table tops, etc.). Placing several rugs or mats on the floor around the bed if the person falls out of bed can also be a good idea. Additionally, using bed rail wedge pads might help avoid bumps and falls. Bed rail wedge pads are designed to bridge the space between the mattress and side rail, offering protection against injuries against the side rail or getting caught up in the rails themselves. The thick foam that makes up the pads provide cushioning and support and the long-lasting bacteriostatic vinyl fabric that covers them is durable and easy to clean. The cushions come with a simple attachment system that includes side-release buckles for a secure and easy installation. These wedge pads come in two sizes - 35-inch half rail pads and 70-inch full rail pads.

Other ways to prevent injuries due to seizures during sleep include:

Sleeping on a futon, a low bed, or putting the mattress on the floor itself. Floor pads or thick rugs can also be placed on the floor next to the bed.

Limit the number of pillows used so they don’t get in the way at night.

Sharing a bedroom or having someone nearby who can help if a seizure occurs can be recommended. Placing a monitor in the room so someone can hear if a seizure occurs at night. This is important if the caregiver sleeps elsewhere in the house.

There are several seizure alert or detection devices including bed sensor mats, movement detectors (e.g., Emfit), or camera or sound monitors that can also prove useful.
